Retirement & Exit Planning for Business Owners

You built the business. Let’s make sure it funds the retirement you actually want.

I help Calgary business owners turn decades of building something real into a tax-efficient, well-protected retirement — whether that means selling, passing it down, or winding it down on your own terms.

Your financial plan should match the stage your business is actually in

Most retirement advice is generic and assumes a pension and a fixed date. Business owners face a different set of decisions — what your business is actually worth, how to extract that value tax-efficiently, and what comes next. Here’s where I typically step in.

Growing the Business

Reinvesting everything, retirement feels far off

Most of what you earn goes back into the business. Retirement planning feels premature, but the structures you set up now — how you hold assets, how you pay yourself — determine how much flexibility you have later.

Peak Operations

The business is healthy, but so is your exposure

Your net worth is concentrated in one asset: the business itself. This is when we start building a plan that doesn’t depend entirely on a successful sale years from now, and start separating personal wealth from business risk.

Preparing to Exit

Sell, pass it down, or wind it down — the numbers should decide

Business valuation, buyer readiness, family succession, and the tax consequences of each path. We model the real numbers behind each option so you’re deciding with facts, not just instinct.

Life After the Business

Turning what you built into income that lasts

Corporate wind-down, estate and legacy planning, and converting business equity into reliable personal income — mapped out well before your last day running the business, not scrambled together at it.

What I help you with

Four pillars, one coordinated plan

Each on its own is useful. Together, they’re what actually turns your business into a funded retirement.

Retirement Planning

A retirement funded by strategy, not a business sale you hope goes well

Corporate and personal retirement income planning that doesn’t leave your future entirely dependent on how well the business sells.

Succession & Exit Planning

A clear plan for what happens to the business when you step back

Whether you’re selling, passing it to family, or winding it down, we build the plan around real numbers and a realistic timeline, not guesswork.

Estate Planning

A legacy that reaches your family, not the tax bill

Wills, trusts and estate strategy coordinated with your lawyer so more of what you’ve built goes where you intend it to.

Corporate Tax Strategy

Tax-efficient use of your corporation, right up to and through exit

Income splitting, holding company structures, and tax-efficient corporate wind-down strategies designed for your specific business structure.

Straightforward & transparent

You’ll always know exactly what you’re paying for

Depending on the service, I’m compensated by fee, by commission when insurance or investment products are involved, or a combination of both. What matters is that you’ll always know upfront exactly how I’m paid and why a recommendation is being made, before you decide anything.

Common questions

Frequently asked, by business owners like you

Ideally five to ten years before you plan to step back. Succession, sale value, and corporate wind-down decisions take years to set up properly, and rushing them at the end usually costs you money and options.

No. While incorporated professionals are one focus, we work with business owners across many industries who are approaching retirement and need to turn what they built into a reliable, tax-efficient income.

It depends on the service. Planning work is fee-based, and where insurance or investment products are involved, I may also be compensated by commission. Either way, you will always know upfront exactly how I am paid before we move forward, so there are no surprises.

Yes. We offer both in-person meetings at our Calgary office and virtual consultations by video call, whichever fits your schedule.

That depends on your goals, your family’s involvement in the business, and the numbers behind each path. We model both scenarios against your retirement income needs so the decision is based on what actually funds your retirement, not just what feels right in the moment.
